Man Finds Silver "Marriage Coin" From 1800's In Backyard After Hurricane

THIBODAUX—
Thibodaux native, Larry Naquin found a rare coin from 1878 in his backyard, four years ago while he was cleaning up after Hurricane Gustav.
"I had to do a lot of moving trees and moving dirt. I was just walking and I happened to find the coin on the ground. When I first saw it I thought it was a Mardi Gras doubloon."

That is good of him to attempt to return it although, it could have been from honeymooners or people from away. He probably got quoted melt value, I would think it would be worth a little more than $15.00. I recently found a wedding band dated 12/25/13 and two sets of initials. Took it to a jeweler and he said it was most likely a wedding band from 1913. I read the 1913 and 1914 local papers, spoke with many people including the local historical society and the curator said it was most likely lost from someone who did not live in the area. Best of luck to him.
