Time capsule buried by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams unearthed in Boston

CATHERINE GARCIA | DECEMBER 11, 2014

A time capsule buried by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams in 1795 was extracted Thursday after hours of chipping away at a stone block.

The copper container was the size of a cigar box and green from oxidation, The Boston Globe reports, and was inside the cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse. The capsule is thought to be the oldest such artifact found in the United States, and was removed once before, in 1855, when the building had to undergo emergency repairs. It was placed in the cornerstone when it was reset.

After the capsule was unearthed this time, it was taken to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, accompanied by a police escort. While some coins that were thrown into the plaster for good luck fell out during the removal, no one is quite sure what's inside the container, and the museum plans to X-ray the capsule over the weekend.

Now THAT is really cool, thanks for posting it TH.

Mike

No fooling. I would love to be there for the opening of that. John Winter might not agree with me, but -- I think that's awesome.

I hope they find a letter inside written by some of the founding fathers. And I hope the letter reads something like this, "Although our mortal voices have long since ceased, we, your nation's founders, care still to remind you that the ideas put forward in the Constitution will continue to ring true throughout time; that your inalienable rights can never be justifiably revoked or altered by any governing body; that no matter how much time passes here on Earth the United States will remain a symbol of perseverance and self reliance; forever a nation founded upon the principals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and should these principals ever be threatened, we remind you that it is your duty as American Patriots to forcibly oppose such a threat. The tree of liberty cannot grow if it is choked by the rot of oppression; cast off this rot. Know that the only thing worse than living under oppression is accepting it. Stick to your guns, follow the constitution, and all will be well." Your Guardians in Time -The American Founders

And then under the letter in the box is a small tree nut with a note: "From the original Liberty Tree. Plant it, care for it, let it grow."

It will be so cool if this is kinda like what's in the actual box when they open it! I can't wait!

What I want to know is WHY it takes 2 days and "over the weekend" to open it... seems odd... an x-ray takes 1 minute to set and shoot.
I mean it is the size of a shoebox. Sheesh just open the damn thing carefully already...
They can use my crowbar and chainsaw if they need it. heh

It was surely opened and looted in 1855.
Question; why would Paul Revere and Samuel Adams bury a "time capsule" together.
Hopes; box is filled with historic artifacts. Including Sam Adams original beer recipe. ;)
Peace ✌

As I understand it, when it was opened the last time, they treated, conserved the items and put them back in the box.
coins were acid washed?

it's been 4 days and I haven't heard anything so I guess there wasn't anything important in there. Frank five star.png
