wow, if they are finding gold like that, those beaches would be a literal gold mine for a metal detector!

Yeah, but if one of us came there with a metal detector, we would be floating face down, in that beautiful surf, the next day!

Yes it is really hard to hold onto and use a metal detector in South America. You need security if you are even going to bring it out in public and both the cops and robbers are really interested in a bad way. I didn't do amazing in Peru but the year after I was there a few locals tracked down the treasure lead I was working on and did pretty well recovering dozens of Spanish silver coins. I didn't have enough time and resources but at least I made it out of the house. I'd stick to the rake if that's what works, the detector brings too much attention.
