in recent years I have ran into many stubborn 20/20 tunnel vision paleontologist, short version, "if I didn't find it... it cannot exist" mentality...
any bets this is the same kind of story, some history prof did not find it on a dig so it cannot be real....

Receiving or dealing with an artifact Out Of Context is a big deal, really.
Science requires stuff to have an associational reference, somewhere in the process, to be able to say Here This Cool Object Came From Such And Such Layer of date-able time period, and the Archaeological Record Shows Us That Other Like Style Stuff came from the same time period too. Styles of artifacts can often help date a site.
