Archaeologists take second look at cannon, site where it was found

Associated Press - September 24, 2007 8:05 AM ET

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A cannon found by fishermen off the Virginia coast more than two decades ago is getting a second look.

Archaeologists have studied the underwater site where the cannon was found. Some historians wonder if the cannon is a possible sign of a British shipwreck.

The cannon measures about 4 feet long and weighs about 300 pounds, and some historians date it back to the 1580s and if that's correct, it would be 1 of the oldest English artifacts found in the Americas. Others disagree with that estimate, saying it could be from a ship that sailed along the coast after the founding of Jamestown.
