Human sacrifice for treasure

CHIRALA: A case of human sacrifice came to light at Amodagiripatnam in Vetapalem mandal. Giving the case details, DSP K Srinivasa Rao said Dogiparthi Subrahmanyam, a weaver, along with some others embarked on a treasure hunt on the night of December 9.
They buried Bathuni Srinivas (32) of the same village in a 12-foot-deep pit alive to propitiate spirits for exploring the treasure. Later, Srinivas’ wife lodged a complaint with the police stating that her husband went missing.
Suspecting Subrahmanyam’s hand behind Srinivas’ disappearance, the police questioned him. But nothing was divulged.
On January 30, Subrahmanyam and his wife Jayalakshmi and their son Nagamalleswara Rao attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at St Ann’s Engineering College.
Later, they survived due to provision of timely medical aid. When questioned, Jayalakshmi stated that they attempted suicide unable to bear the police harassment. Then the police again interrogated Subrahmanyam, who spilled the beans. Some people from Chennai, Parachur and Nellore were also involved in the human sacrifice.
Following the disclosure, the police exhumed the body of Srinivas from the pit and sent it to the area hospital for post-mortem.
