Burglar's Map Leads to Buried Treasure Under Calif. Freeway

LOS ANGELES — Just like on an old-fashioned pirate map, X marked the spot.

But instead of a desert island, police dug under a San Fernando Valley freeway underpass Tuesday, and the stash of jewelry recovered appears to be loot lifted by a convicted burglar.

An attorney for Roberto Caveda provided the hand-drawn map to detectives. It led them to the dirt of a California Department of Transportation right of way near the Ronald Reagan Freeway in Granada Hills.

With the roar of traffic as a backdrop, officers dug 12 to 14 inches down and found a 2-foot-long black plastic pipe, Detective Bill Schultz said.

If anyone lives in Orange County, try going into the centers of the on/off ramps such as Bristol & the 405 Fwy. There used to be large traisient camps in several throughout the county. We used to do sweeps to clear them out. You wouldn't believe the stuff they hauled in under the trees. There might be other caches such as this one waiting for someone.

If any of the wrist watches were Rolex, I'd use the serial number to check if it was stolen. Any jewelry items would be checked for names or initials for ID purposes. If Rolex watches and engraved jewelry items were in the cache, then photos and inventory would be made THEN I'd make contact with the police detectives of the nearest burglary division.
If NO Rolex and NO engraving----I'd KEEP THE STUFF....unless newspaper and / or TV news detailed the items taken in a burglary or armed robbery, then check with police. :'( If there were NO links to follow, then back to my second answer. That's treasure hunting. :coffee2:
