Treasure-laden shipwreck found off Africa
The national diamond mining company in Namibia says it has found a 500-year-old shipwreck laden with treasure.
The shipwreck was discovered off the coast of Namibia's 'forbidden zone', where a sea wall is used to push back the Atlantic Ocean to search for diamonds.
Excavations revealed copper ingots and several bronze cannons, followed by the remains of a wooden sailing ship. Mining operations were immediately suspended and archaeologists called in.
They found a full cargo of treasure, including thousands of Spanish and Portuguese coins, and more than 50 tusks of ivory.
Experts believe the vessel dates from the early 16th century, when the first European explorers were mapping the coast of south-west Africa.
