He is new to the hobby, and has been using my kids' Tesoro Compadre. He has done well, already found his first silver quarter and a handful of wheat cents. He is ready to move up a little. He is definately interested in Tesoro products, but would consider Whites and any other major brand of detector. Appreciate your help.

You can get a lightly used Tesoro Silver Umax for $200, it's an amazing detector.

Thats my advice too...A Tesoro Silver Umax. Used ones a little under $200 or get a new one for just under $240, shipped and have a guaranteed, mint unit. With the Tesoro lifetime warranty, you cant go wrong.
