Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
Geez Boomer, better get busy! 45 ain't that far off!
As to why? It fits with my character, T-net and other forums are the closest I get to social interaction outside of a work environment. Yeah I have old friends who I occasionally gather with and I enjoy meeting other detectorists in the field. The same when I hit a river in the middle of nowhere in the canoe. If I bump into others it's okay, but for the most part it's a solitary endeavor that momentarily takes away the crowded world.
I've managed neighborhood events and done plenty with the schools in association with our kids' involvements, worked in an international environment and had thousands of work relationships so I'm not totally anti-social, but the solitary endeavor of MD'ing, or putting a riverbank between you and the rest of the world if only for a short period is a nice respite. The goodies found are the icing on the proverbial cake. Still got a kid to put into college so I can't go country just yet but am looking forward to it, given there's good MD'ing ground nearby....
Just a country boy in a city world.

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
I used to do a ton of fishing when I was a kid. I kind of got out of the blood and guts stuff of fishing, but never gave up that feeling of "catching the big one". With TH'ing, it's kind of like fishing. You never know what your going to get, you could get skunked really easy or you could have a great day. You can spend a great deal on equipment and it really doesn't matter when the right "fish" comes along, and....people still ask you "what did you get?" 8)

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
I love detecting everything I can whenever me feeling better to get out into the field, does not matter what I find as I am still alive. My health is making me harder to get out there but I try every time to make the best of what I can. So number 12 was mine.

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
How about "I'm one of those people who doesn't go to bars to socialize, and I'd rather spend my time doing something positive (like finding $, helping clean the environment, getting excercize, enjoying nature) than sitting home watching TV."
I guess #12 is close enough!

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
It sends me on a bit of a flip digging up something from another age. And I get to thinking what a different world it was, back then, and how much times have changed since. And how much has happened to change things in the great lengths of time that artifact has been resting, quietly undiscovered, in the ground. That, and nature, just takes me far, far away from whatever small stuff I've been fretting over as a natural result of being in a busy life with people, expectations, responsibilities. I feel completely cleaned and clear by the time the detecting day is done, and there's the mulling over of what's found to be done yet, too. It's a very dreamlike activity which brings you in contact with 'other realities' (the past is a series of different worlds). Nature cools my jets.

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
All of you have great reasons for enjoying metal detecting but abrakdabra pretty well sums it up for me. I enjoy the camaraderie of hunting with my hunting partner and also the historical aspect of the items found. I remember the first Civil War minnie ball that I found back in March of 1989. At that time, it had been in the ground approxomately 125 years. My thoughts went back to that day in 1864 and wondered who fired the bullet, did they survive the battle, were they Union or Confederate, and if they did survive, how long did they live after the war? I've dug thousands of targets since then and usually with each target similar thoughts cross my mind. And, like most of you have said, it is a relaxing way to "clear the mind" of the cares of this world.
Wishing you the best.

Why Do You like Metal detecting ???
It's always fun to dig up valuables that have been lost and forgotten. But my main thrill is just wondering what will come out next. MDing is sort of like gold prospecting. You get to harvest soemthing from the earth that could be lost forever if you dont seize your chance to grab it. When i find a coin or a ring i Smile a bit and start swinging again, Because you never know what will pop out with the next sweep of your coil. Man, now i got the blood going. I think it is time to go out hunting

Its like fishing.. think about it. You never know what you will catch.
I would bet some people that dont like fishing dont like metal detecting much either.
