I guess it all depends on what's on it and if is a rare archive. I remember over at my friend's house his mother was a big supporter of Goldwater, as she setup this goblet on an end table with yellow food died color water in it. Looking back that was one election we even talked about in grade school. I'm sure our teacher was a big LBJ supporter, as it seemed I heard more about him, being the one we should bug our parents about.

where would be a good starting place as far as who I should contact who is closest to an expert on things like this?

You might want to put it through a machine that can play it and make a digital backup copy. Magnetic or cellulose tape deteriorate with time.

I'd try contacting the University of Arizona, as Goldwater was a native son and a well loved historical figure of the Copper State.
