I recently found a 1970 s doubled die penny. I have been looking all over the internet and cannot find a value. Can anyone here let me know a value and if it would be worth getting it graded?

I see what people are asking for but is that the actual value?

Value of Anything is Very Hard to Say.

Actual Value is what someone is willing to Pay and the seller is Willing to accept.

I Unfortunately do Not have a book on Errors for "Book Value"

I Would imagine a Coin that is Encapsulated & Graded could Demand a Better Price but again,
Someone can Ask $50,000 Book Value may be $5000. & Someone can Offer $50.

Don't trust Dealers to Tell you the Truth.

Actual Buying Prices can be seen on Ebay under Sold Listings if any sold

I didn't even know about checking sold listings, haha. I have notice that most of the ddo coin listed are not ddo, it's just shadows or lies, haha. Thanks! I know the grading for varieties are $71 with NGC and I know it won't get better then AU. I just don't want to waste money getting it graded. Thanks for the info!

Yes and I believe this is the large date. The red book calls out a ddo for 70 s but not whether is a small or large date.... or I'm reading it wrong, haha. I'm still fairly new at coin error hunting.

Yeah,back in 71 I collected tons of 70 small date.Maybe someday I'll really go through them :)

Yep, I'm no fan of Grading Either.
Would have to be a Million Dollar coin before I'd throw $71 away .

Just mentioning it

It looks like strike doubling. That's where the coin slid a tiny bit and the second set of letters are flat. You can see in Jeff OF PA's post the double die for that year had rounded edges. A Comprehensive Web Encyclopedia of U.S. Copper Coinage has good information on this process.

I'll have to get a closer look at the eye. I think the only way to get a definitive answer would be sending it in to grade, haha.

I agree on strike doubling and not doubled die. Notice that the mint mark is doubled the same as the date. Die doubling is caused when the die is made and the hub shifts which makes the image doubled in the die itself. In 1970 the mint mark was hand punched into the die after the die was made so it would not show the doubling that the rest of the die has.

I just came across this site that shows the mint mark being doubled too. I've already decided to not get it graded because my doubling doesn't match the doubling direction of the pictures. I'll probably post it on Ebay since it's not a a real doubled die.

I wish I could have picked up brand new rolls of 60s and 70s coins. The deep strikes look so much better then the modern ones, haha. I was born In the "zinc" era, haha
