When I take a mangled coin to the bank like that, they give me really funny looks, like I'd chewed on it or something.

Many banks and credit unions will not accept severely damaged coins. The likelihood of jamming coin counting machines and coin rolling machines is fairly high. If refused for that reason, the value just decreased from ten cents to zero. That is a judgement call by the accepting employee. If accepted, be thankful. If not, that is part of life.

Now that you have the bad news, that even under the best circumstances you dime is worth a dime, what prompted you to ask the question?

Time for more coffee.

Someone told me to have it checked out because it looks as if it was an error in the making of it. I'm clueless when it comes to this and I've seen others online that look similar and were worth alot

You've seen similar that sold or you've seen similar that are for sale, for a lot? BIG difference!

I would use it to pay for something next time your out buying stuff. This dime has spent some time in the street getting run over by automobiles.

1: The someone who told you it looked like an error coin is wrong.

2: I, too, have seen damaged coins for sale on various platforms with stupid high asking prices. Sellers that offer damaged coins, claiming they are mint errors, are scammers or stupid. Either is possible with scammers being more prevalent.

3: Since you claim to be clueless when it comes to coins, please pick up a few guidebooks. I find mine helpful. Also, if you truly have an interest in coins, please learn all you can about the coin manufacturing process. Knowing how the process works is very helpful in determining if a coin is truly an error, or damaged post mint.

Time for more coffee.

How about this, in 1972 when this coin was minted, using an inflation calculator, the 1972 dime would have purchased what 62 cents can purchase today. Conversely today 10 cents can buy what 2 cents could buy in 1972. So while your dime was sitting where ever you found it, in today's terms, it went from being able to buy 62 cents of stuff down to buying 10 cents worth of stuff for an 83% decrease in value.

I used Inflation Calculator: https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

ticndig: 'Road rash; I like the phrase.
Don..

You wouldn't like it when you fell off a motorcycle!! I believe that's where the phrase came from and I have a couple spots of it to this day.
