    "The Western World" mirror ...

    Greetings,

A few of the pieces dug in an old dump ... Any info out there on the Western World piece? Along the bottom it says Pat June 16 63 (or maybe 68 ... hard to tell .. still needs some cleaning). It looks like it was an "ad" piece and must have once been a mirror (back side has the silver lining under the glass that you see in a lot of old compacts. Good shape on the front ... back glass got cracked and let the water in I think.

Also found couple other buttons .. one looks like a royal navy button but the design looks slightly different. If anyone has a more definitive answer on that, it would also be appreciated. Back was an eye loop but it was so encrusted that it broke off and took out the entire back ... so no backmark is available ...

As always .... thanks for the help ...

Re: "The Western World" mirror ...

Interesting Wester World Piece. Obviously it was some type of newspaper in Boston..

Boston can lay claim to being the home of five of the first ten newspapers in the United States. This piece intrigues me, but I have yet to find ANY related info on it as far as it's relation to Boston. Still looking though..it's really starting to bother me!! As far as the patent date "63" it can't be 1663 nor 1763 cause the first US patent was granted in 1790; so that leaves us with 1863. Nice finds!

Re: "The Western World" mirror ...

I did find a link to a bunch of newspapers listed at the boston library ... but it did not list this one. Maybe it is not a newpaper per se ... ?? Not entirely sure that it is a "63" but that is what it looks like ... I was thinking 1863 too .... too bad that the patent office doesn't yet have the ability to search online for patent issue dates for something this old ...

Here is the one link I did find for boston newspapers in general ... just for anyones interest ....

I am considering sending a request to maybe the boston historical society or similar to see if they can help.

I could be wrong but I think that you can only use patent number and classification when searching for anything older then 1976. Click on the advanced or quick search link on the page you sent ...

I just started playing with the patent site a week or so back so I don't know the in's and out's yet .... will be good when you can search for anything

Re: "The Western World" mirror ...

thanks to all for the comments ... thanks for link, Sparklystuff ... it does look similar to it. Too bad I don't have the backmark to confirm. I read somewhere that a couple other countries used a similar design but haven't been able to lock anything down yet.

I contacted the Boston Library and the Boston historical society about the Western World mirror. The society did not have any info on it but they did request some pictures. Hopefully one of them will come up with something .....
