I dug this piece of metal a while back in southeastern MA. It has several dates and numbers on it. It says "pantented" on it as well. it is about three inches long. It's about the thickness of a dime as well. I believe it has a copper core. The dime is in there for scale. I attempted to search patents but had no success. any idea what it could be? thanks.
I did attempt to cross this with the next date, Aug. 24 1858 but came up with so many pages/numbers to check, it could be done but it would very time consuming. One of the above may be a starting point.

okay, with the bazillion patents out there....I have narrowed the plate down to be a serial number plate for....trumpets please....something...
my mind went numb...it has either something to do with...
sewing machines...
weaving machines/looms...
stoves....
planting/plowing tools...
or wire manufacture/handling...

Same number on your piece, but the date does not match!
I spent an awful lot of time on that one, hoping the top number on the plate was in fact, the patent number and tried to tie it into that machine. The only thing i am rather sure of is that i have much more respect for lawyers, well patent lawyers anyways.
It was fun however, to read some of those patents.
(i also attempted several number combo`s as well 9344, 9,344 93440a1, 9344-oa1, etc )

Every once and awhile i have a "duh" moment, in this case it didnt dawn on me to search out some of the products the patents apply too. I pulled up the HOWE sewing machine info provided by Ron & Ann and here it is.
Scroll down a bit and you will see this "Shuttle cover plate", its to close to be coincidental imho.
EDIT: Found this as well "The slide plates are brass and have various patent dates listed, the earliest being Sept 10 1846 and the last one being Jan 30 1872."

I wanted to change the titled of this post as SOLVED so that people can see how great the research was to help me out. I have no doubt that it is solved. The pictures look exactly like what I have and the dates in the external link show the exact dates written on mine. I'm still so impressed at the tnet'ers research skills. I tried to come up with an answer on my own and kept falling short. Thanks again!
