I don't think this shell has been fired,there are NO signs of being struck by a firing pin,which would be on the bottom edge (rimfire).Possibly over exposure from heat ?

Probably was in a confined container and heat set it off and melted the lead. Monty

Throw non jacketed bullets in a really hot fire. The Lead melts often before the powder inside blows the bullet off the casing(no pressure buildup_

agree with everyone, its been in a fire.

looks to be too much material to have come from the lead bullet portion and seems to be the wrong colour for lead,looks like iron staining in the second pic.just my 2 cents.
