small container
I have no clue what this is. I found it in NC hunting a friends place. It has tiny hinges and opens to another compartment which has a hole in the center. There are initials on the face. It is seriously fragile so, I couldn't clean it any further. I guess if I were to guess, It looks like a tiny photo pack? I dunno? help please....

In the academies many books, at the circus many sacks of peanuts, at the club rooms many cigar butts.

I agree - it looks like two sets of initials and a date engraved on the front.
Is it silver? Brass?

Re: small container
looks earlier than 'photo' era, but I would guess that the circular area, (almost looks like the top of a heart on the one side) was for some form of depiction of a loved one. Maybe even a wedding picture. The cover seems to have two sets of initials and maybe a "+" in between them? Sort of a 'Tom loves Sue' sort of thing.
It is really small isn't it!

Re: small container
Pressed powder or rouge compact. I have 2 of them from the 30's or 40's. Initials are the makers....such as C G=Covergirl.
Good luck and HH, zztop

Re: small container
Before there were photo's, some well to do's would have a miniture painting done of a loved one to carry off to battle. I saw some such items in a museum many years ago. The detail was amazing and closely resembled a photo. This could be one of those. They were usually fairly ornate and most were in gold cases. However, the size and construction style looks very close and I suppose some could have been cased in lesser metals. Check with an art museum that has some knowledge of this type of art. I have seen some amazing miniture paintings in very small locketts and gold cases just like this. Where's my Grog?
