It looks like it also might have had a handle on it? Maybe an old colander or a steaming basket for veggies? Just a guess.

I don't see any evidence of a handle on it, but there may have been one. Isnt percolating something to do with coffee? Im not sure i dont make coffee.

It does look like the old coffee grind holder and probably had a handle for removal.

And it Took Forever to Make a Pot Of Coffee.

    Re: "The magic percolator"

I don't think it is a coffee grounds basket. It would have to have a hole for the water tube otherwise it wouldn't 'perk' just boil..I don't see a hole for that.If you just set it in a pot by a handle, you wouldn't even get 'cowboy' coffee.Jeff,I'm 70yr old and I've never heard of just putting beans in the pot! It was my job when I was young, starting about 4yr,to grind our coffee in my g'grandmother's wooden grinder every morning before the pot went on the wood cook stove.Sure, you got some grounds from the basket and if you didn't want them in your cup of coffee, you would strain it thru a 'T'towel(used for drying dishes)and most likely made from cloth sugar or flour sacks. Those sacks made a lot of things. My g'grandmother use to wear bloomers made from them for so long she had dumplings in them! Even tho this basket says 'percolator' it could have also been used for and in a 'Drip' coffee pot where you hang the basket and pour your boiling water over it and the grounds. Just a thought.

    Re: "The magic percolator"

Jeff, second thoughts on this 'percolator'--It may be a unit to test the soil percolation.I know now days, before a septic system goes in,a percolation test is required. It's to see how fast water will perculate thru the soil. Some farmers may also do this test to see how well surface water will drain.Don't know

No a PERC Test is Just a I foot or So Deep hole In the Ground.

They Pour Water In & then Time How Long it takes to Sink into the Soil.

Only Tools needed A shovel, a Water Bucket & a Watch.

    I'v Had a Perc Test done about 10 - 15 Years ago

    Re: "The magic percolator"

When I was a kid there was two types of coffee pots, dripolators and percolators. Drip coffee was the more modern and perhaps they coined it "magic" because it didn't have to be perked? Looks like a drip basket to me. JIM

P.S. I still make perked coffee when camping and it is much better than that Mr. Coffee crap!

    I'm like you Jimmileo.
When I go camping I take along a percolater coffee pot that has a clear glass top piece so that you can see when the water boils and the water starts to go through the coffee grinds. As it continues to "perk" through the coffee grinds you can see the coffee getting darker. When it gets to your liking it's time to pour you a cup of "brew". Dang! makes me want to get my Labrador "Jake" and pack up my gear and GO.
