Civil war,,Cave,,flag staff,,Ram rod what is this thing ? SOLVED !!!!!

    Hello Tnet friends.
I need some help on an item I found about twenty years ago,,,,,,, We used to cave or Spelunk the caves on Lookout Mtn Tn. The main one we did was the water run off from Ruby Falls. The cave was called Mystery cave and at that time had the 3rd highest underground water fall in the world. Of course we did not know that but we repelled it many times. Little do people know that Lookout mtn in Chattanooga is riddled with caves. We lost our access that we were using when the city fixed the water drainage system off the roads. We knew after our long accent in the cave we were about to the River level of the Tennessee. So we decided to tackle it from the river. Around the base of the mtn are several caves with large openings near the rail road that circles into Chattanooga. While in one of the caves I climbed a crack up towards the ceiling.I placed my hand in the crack for a hold and felt a stick. It was not a stick but this metal thing with wood in the middle. I felt it was used as a torch and crammed into the rocks for people camping in the cave opening . The wood is burned on the end up to the metal. The wood is hand carved at the end.
Now that I am enjoying looking for relics again I found this site and pulled it out for" the what is it" area. Maybe some of these Civil war pros will help with identifying it.
I found this around the early eighty's I guess and I know that the Military Park has since then been able to acquire that area and a lot of Wauhatchie right by it a few years ago. Oh yeah out of those lower caves came Saber tooth Tigers which were sent to the University at Tennessee. The cave bears were to embedded in the drippings from the stalactites (sp?)... Sorry for the long history of the item.
Is it part of a flag staff some kinda ram rod or what? It is Brass with a plating on it.
    Thanks,
    TnMountains

From where you said you found it I am gonna say a boat oar. The copper part would be the part that sat in the oar locks or guides then the paddle part on one end of that and handle on the other.

The brass is very thin with what was once some type of gilt or finish on it. The wood is only as thick as a one inch dowel. If an oar part it would not have been very strong. I am still leaning on some type of flag tip

if it was smaller the way it is made I would have said a holder for a pencil, wondering if it was a large display for one.

The insides are wood. Both ends were broken off with one having been burnt. The smaller end was hand carved at about 22.5 degree angles to form its circle. If a pencil or writing instrument it would have been pretty large in the hand and fingers. It was made to come apart though as each piece slips together. There is also a pin size hole that probable had a little tack in it to hold the cylinder to the end piece. You guys are giving me things I have not thought of. Thank you

Never thought of that at all. I have some old pfleugers reels and will see if it. slides in.If not will shoot the downward angle of that area. They would still have had to fasten the bottom and there seems to be no wear of anything mounted to the side of this thing ? Good idea lost and buzz. Think I wil hit an old civil war bridge in the morn if we are not flooding to bad.
