"R"--Possible British Regimental Insignia?

Found this item a couple of weeks ago with DigginitRTB in what we like to call "The Button Field". All of the stuff we find is about 10-12" down. Understandable being a plowed field. Rich found what appears to be part of a sword hanger and I will have him repost it for you guys. I found this relic in the same spot. it is gilted in gold, measures 1- 3/8" square,(EXACTLY), at it's widest points, and weighs about 15 grams. Is VERY well made and actually quite heavy. On the back you can notice 3, (possibly 4), seperate spots where it appears to have been attached to something and broke off. The reason I put this on here is, I was noticing that it GREATLY, or almost EXACTLY, resembles the "R" on British Regimental Insignias from the Revolutionary War. As alot of you know I am in a spot where there was activity from the American Revolution, so I was wondering if this may be part of some uniform insignia or equipment insignia. There doesn't appear, as though, any other letter was attached to this "R", as it must have stood alone on something. Is it possible it's British cartridge box insignia??

This is all I could find in my book on Military Collectables by Joe Lyndhurst . The "R" looks alot like the one you have .

Its not a typical shoulder/lapel badge. It doesn't look brass for a start.........

I think its military related, possibly pre-1900 & thats all I can say about it.......
