Large Cent with a name inscribed on it...I FOUND OUT WHO THE OWNER WAS!
I found this 1827 large cent in Eldon in Miller County, MO over the weekend and when I got the dirt cleaned off of it I noticed it had something inscribed into it. E.B. Thomas, MCH.22
Can anyone tell me what the MCH.22 is or why someone would do this? I have looked everywhere I could think of online trying to find out who E.B. Thomas is but can't find any reference to him.
This could be a Civil War soldiers I.D. disc, maybe 22nd Michigan unit? Soldiers would make these id discs or have them made for identification if they were killed or wounded. Just a gues... Cool find...
I think this is a copper which has been counterstamped by a business. There is a reference out there which lists these--and you may be able to find the listing in that resource. I don't have a copy of it, however.
If the stamp is unlisted, you may wish to look for military records under that name--but I really think it's a counterstamped copper rather than an ID disc.
Best Wishes,

The 22nd MICH Infantry volunteers were from St. Clair, Macomb, Oakland, Livingston, Lapeer and Sanilac counties. They left Pontiac, Mich. on Sept. 4 1862 en route to central Kentucky, 997 soldiers strong. Missouri would be a little out of the way.
"Merchant Countermarks on United States Coins" by Gregory Brunk
(I don't--but with the whole name on the coin, it has a good shot of being identified if it is a counterstamp)
In my mind, odds are this is a counterstamp--since it is punched into the face of the coin. If it were a personalized one, then the information would've been scratched in with a knife, rather than purchasing a circular punch with the information set into it.

I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines. I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.

Re: Large Cent with a name inscribed on it...I FOUND OUT WHO THE OWNER WAS!
I still think you should check the book for the counterstamp...I will search the forum to sees who has a copy...
If it is in there, then it is not an ID disc.
Otherwise, sure--your theory seems to match well.
