No. These 1 inch tokens are not Shell's Mr. Presidents Coin Game of the 70's. The date above the head token is from the 50's I believe. Shell made a similar brass presidential series in the 70's but a larger size and different date location.

your token looks like it's from one of the presidential commemorative or so-called "presidential data" series issued around 40-50 years ago. Some were given away at gas stations, others at banks, and I believe some were also used as prizes in boxes of breakfast cereal. Later, they were also sold in sets or albums in gift and hobby shops. BCH: I must be missing the entry where someone suggested these tokens are from the 1970s. I see only reference to the 50s and 60s.

The Shell Oil Co. Presidential series I recall was in the 60s. Here's one of those 60s token. Note this one is in aluminum and reference is also given to a set in bronze.

These Shell Oil coins (of the 60s) are recognizable for having some history on the back. Later in the 1970s, Shell did another presidential-token promotion, but in aluminum with a generic back that read “Shell’s Mr. President Game”, that was handled in a similar manner."

The Shell series may have been very late 60's but I think early 70's. It has an LBJ. I definitely remember these in the 70's growing up. It really doesnt matter in this case. This token with the date above the head is NOT from this Shell series. PBK is always right and I have investigated this myself. I believe it is 50's. 1-Shell Series= maybe late 60's - 70's. (2 types). Aluminum quarter size and large brass half dollar size.

2-Presidential data series= 50's. Date above the head, brass, quarter size. (pic posted ohdigger and fortbball)


This date on the "date above the head series" can be dated by the last president IMO. If anybody is willing to search for it. I doubt you will find a Kennedy or LBJ in this series. I understand there is a bit of confusion and misinformation on the net about these tokens because two brass types are very simmilar when described. I hope this helps clear it up for you Mackaydon.

OK TY. Maybe it started in 1968 and went well into the 70's. But I think this conversation is irrelevant. This "date above the head" series posted is NOT the Shell series. Do you understand what I am trying to say? THIS IS NOT a late 60's- 70's SHELL SERIES TOKEN. These "date above the head" tokens are older. Try to find me a Kennedy or LBJ...

The Shell tokens are similar, as you said, but I think this is confusing the ID. Here are the 2 types of Shell series that this is NOT. . Notice no date above the head. I hope this helps.

I have no problem Mack. If you read back you will see I was only responding to fortbballs reponse that you were "right on with ID". Your Shell set, that you collected in the 60's, I think is similar in appearance only. NO ID.

These two brass sets are very confusing. There is also much misinformation on the internet. There are two brass sets very similar in appearance. Maybe the "date above the head" token is from an earlier 60's Shell but I dont understand why it would be given at banks and in cereal boxes. If I ever get a positive ID, I will post it.

Sorry, I no longer have that collection. I was going on fond memories of collecting those tokens; my collection was augmented by paying the gas attendant "a little something on the side" so that I might be given an extra handful of those tokens.

Correct. The "date above the head" presidential set is older than the two Shell sets of the late 60's and the 70's. Im trying to find the last president. The Shell set ends with LBJ.

I have posted the two different Jeffersons front and back for comparison. ( top is Shell's)(Bottom is ohdiggers). You can see the similarities and why they are often confused and misIDed on the internet forums.

There was a board that you would advance by spinning an arrow. You were asked a question and if you gave a correct answer you received a bronze coin like the one you found.
The edition we had was up through President Eisenhower.
It was a great game where I learned campaign slogans like "Tippicanoe and Tyler too" for , I think, William Henry Harrison. Thats the kind of information you would find on the back side of the coins.

I'm glad this topic came up. I collected nearly all the brass Shell Presidential tokens.
Just checked and the newest President I have is Richard Nixon. However it has no
date but looks exactly like the others. The next newest is Harry Truman so I am
missing the rest after HST to LBJ.
I also have 6 mint aluminum Shell Mr President Coin Game tokens and some dug
ones too.
I wonder when the undated Nixon came out.

I remember the Shell game in the 70's. This pretty much proves it. The game could still have come out in 68 and the Nixon token was added later in the early 70's. Would be cool to see the pic.
