    Bell ID needed

Would any one know the age of this bell? I've heard of the ones used durring the Civil War but, have never seen one. This one seems to be built well and has a little weight to it. Thanks for the help!

    Re: Bell ID needed

That type bell is called a "crotal" or "rumbler" bell and here is a 19th century "crotal" or "rumbler" bell that has similar markings as yours. Although it is a lot larger than yours.

The type of loop on top plus being decorated on the bottom half only, puts your bell into late 18th to mid 19th century.

    Re: Bell ID needed

Does it have a number on the bottom? On private property, with the permission of the land owner, I dug an identical one only a bit larger, w/ a number 3 on the bottom, at a large union civil war camp. Pieces of them show up frequently at camp sites. nice one
