Sword pommel??

I've worked out every bit of my place with the standard coils so today I pulled out the big boy, the 12x15 and dug this deep. Even with almost no discrimination and high sensitivity it barely sang, which makes me think it's time to bring out the kubota again!

Anyway, I thought it was just a finial off an andiron or something with a busted hole in the side until I washed it and found the hole cast in. As well the hole in the base seems to have been rectangular and the one in the top small and round. The thing measures a hair over two inches tall. I think it is a sword pommel, but I thought I'd run it through you guys first. I managed to find a link with a picture of something that seems somewhat similar. Is this a pommel? If so, when would the latst date be of this style? Thanks for looking.

Iron patch, were you able to date yours? I just found this other link with a similar pommel also, but this one is squared. I guess our's date from the mid 1700's through the Rev. War. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...3D336%26um%3D1

I can't date it but the button and coins were mostly early 1800s. My friend did dig an excellent find though, a Rev War 62nd Regt. Capt. Trunk plate.

Ha! purely unintentional Monty. I promise if I've lucky enough to find the blade today I'll run it "by" you, not through you! Although I can't possitively date this pommel yet, I'll mark it solved. Last night I found several dozen very close matches, however they span the period of late 1600's to early 1800's with only very slight variations in the profile from our's. I'm going to check the library this week and see if I can match the exact profile of both Ironpatch's and mine. Thanks
