A medallion found at the former Polo fields in Tulsa, Oklahoma

This medallion was found at the former location of the Polo fields in Mohawk Park Tulsa, Oklahoma which allegedly operated from the 1940's to the 1960's or 70's. I would appreciate any information relating to this item in the way of identifying what it is or just anything. It is one inch in diameter and on the back it reads STORMY 6-8-87. I am assuming that STORMY is the name of a horse. Also I am assuming that the medallion has something to with the equestrian arts. The items in the lower left appear to be the hurdles that a horse would jump over in an equestrian event. Thanks, Bill

Bill, Could it be the medal part of an award? Maybe ones which look like the Olympic medals; gold, bronze, and silver? Breezie

the more i looked at the medallion, the more it looked like a medal for dog competition. working and hunting varieties also have jumps, as well as running a course, and i think they also have the large "bone" thing, too. but the chain circle...chokechain? just looks like an inexpensive award for a local dog competition. i can see it hanging on a collar, and stormy could have been a dog.
    just a guess.

You know when you look at it it does look like it could be a jump and fetch award. I wondered what the dumbbell looking thing was. Do dogs actually have a competition like this?

Thanks for the link Rando. Do you belong to that club? I may send them a pic of that medallion and see what they say.

It is a dog tag for a dog that has earned his CD or CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) title. They must be proficient in obedience, scent tracking and obstacles. Sort of like a PHD for dogs. If there is an active obedience training club active in the area they could probably tell you who the dog was with the date and year along with the name.

    Jones,
Thank you very much for the info. I imagine that the dog has passed on by now but I may try to find the owner.

I tried hunting those polo grounds earlier this year but it was grown up in weeds so high it was hopeless. I planned to go back this fall when the weeds die out. Give me a shout if you come back down this way and we'll hook up. That dumbbell thing almost looks like a piston and connecting rod. Monty

    Monty,
We were just there on Oct 25th and it was nicely mowed. You need to go there now it is sweet digging with short grass. There are a lot of dear droppings though. I agree, I thought that the piston thing was a dumbbell until I found out what it was. It is a dog retrieving item.
We attend soccer tournaments a couple times a year at those soccer fields south of the hiway.
If I am going to be in the area I will give you a shout.

Re: A medallion found at the former Polo fields in Tulsa, Oklahoma

When I was on the TPD I was in charge of the park area on day shift for a year or so and I use to drive through there at least once a shift. Sunday afternoons was really busy with polo matches and there was always a big crowd. There wasn't any soccer fields then but that was before soccer became popular. There is also an old rodeo ground out on the east end of the park that use to flood all the time when Bird Creek would overflow which was about once a year. There was also an amusement park at 36 and Harvard I believe it was, but I haven't been by that area in years. And one of the Indian tribes had an annual powwow that lasted a couple of days for years. If I could figure out where that area is it should be a good area. A of of people use to hunt the park but it is a huge area and it isn't hunted much anymore. You know what they say about "hunted out" parks. Monty

    Those are dog agility jumps.

Stormy was a pup who probably did well at an agility trial and got a medal.

Here's an example of the form from a well known trophy/ribbon/medal company...
