    Re: Anchor buttons questions

The first anchor button might be British, but the flukes are slightly different (it isn't U.S.). The anchor with star is somewhat similar to what Tice and Albert list as a Texas Navy button, except your friend's doesn't include the motto and the star is smaller.

    Re: Anchor buttons questions

Kugar, it's good to see the backmark. Although it's not listed, some of the Texas buttons of the Confederacy were supplied by Paris manufacturers. I'll have to do some more searching to see if this manufacturer can be identified.

    Re: Anchor buttons questions

    The backmark appears to be "T. W. & W. / PARIS" — Trelon, Weldon & Weil, c. 1850's. Some sources cite a wider date range of 1844-1865.

This is the closest match I see but would like to see the back.

ADDED: Is your first oval anchor button one or two piece?

    Re: Anchor buttons questions

It looks to me to be a Civil War, or pre Civil War, era navy button. Not 100% sure, but my best guess!
I have been detecting for about 4 months now, and I am finding great stuff!!!

Thats good, but is it Civvy or Military? My gut is Civvy Fashion, no evidence on this so might be wrong.

Heres a link for Paris backmarks if anyone wants to save it, however it is missing this one that PBK Ided or the link is not correct... They list Trelon, Weldon & Weil as T.W.W. Its hard to tell by the pic.

Look at the above British examples, note that its an almost exact match for a 'RN Capt / Commander - 1787', however these are 1 piece & produced many years previous to the 2 piece pictured. By the mid 19th century the design had changed. That to me, screams Civvy. Unless a foriegn Navy was coping our early design

    Re: Anchor buttons questions

Try to post a pic of the British anchor button back because I am getting confused as to which button we are referring to. Also is this British (1st button) one or two piece?

    Are you sure the backmark says T. W. & W. * PARIS * exactly? There are variations such as T.W.W. or T.W.& W. H.M.
and its hard to see. (see Paris backmark link)
