just wondered if anyone has ever seen anything like this i found it at an old abandoned church that was built in 1862 the cross i can see but the skull and cross bones it is metal around the outside and wood in the middle must be a good wood like teak or something its in good shape any ideas thanks ken
The skull and cross bones was not uncommon on crucifixes from the 19th and early 20th century. There is plenty of folklore and speculation as to why it is there and why it is NOT there on more modern pieces.
Do an internet search on "crucifix skull and crossbones" and you'll find more info than you could ever read.

Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense and plain dealing.

I agree with Matt - we've seen many posted here in the past.
i never even thought to google it and i google just about everything lol now i feel stupid thanks for the help and ya i need to go get Jesus so he can see the light lol
it means that christ had victory over death * he rose above it --its symbolic --the skull and bones means death --thats why it was used on poison bottles
yes i am finding all kinds of things on it now vary interesting the catholics have a very checkered past I'm not sure how they are still in business
Yes the Roman Catholics have an interesting past as the very first Christian religion (all the other christian religions where created many years later) and its followers still believe in Jesus. Im not sure why the skull and crossbones were dropped as a victory over death symbol.. I think you found the match frogwizard.

look up prince "philip the fair" of france (who was anything but "fair") and pope clement V (the fifth) they plotted the dimise of the knights templer order -- prince philip to get out of his legitimate debts to them --he owed them a bundle already and showed no signs of paying it ( which is why they would not fiscally back his desire to go to war with england) and to also be able to "legally
" sieze their lands and assets in france -- the church got to grab the moneys on deposit with the church banks and to grab their "foreign" lands -- a good deal for each of them
almost all the templers in france were gathered up by royal forces on october friday the 13th * , 1306 -- most were tortured till they "confessed" to heresy and later killed (due to the massive killing of "innocent" people by corrupt leaders --friday the 13th has been thought of as a "cursed day" since then)
however many important religious relics and a vast amount of the templer treasury was "spirited" away into safe keeping by the remaining knights templer --to avoid them being in the hands of philip and clement V -- philip sent out killers to track down the remain templer and to find the "loot" --the templers went "underground" --and developed secert coded greetings and replies and hand shake grips to "know" one another by --some say they were the founders of the "modern masonic lodges"
Its a beautiful crucifix and I would be proud to own it. It may be German from the mid 1800's. Too bad its missing some parts. The part in the center is the halo. The wood is most likely ebony. Here is a good link with more information. http://www.rosaryworkshop.com/MUSEUM...B-European.htm
