Kresge Children Dinner sets mickey mouse (Pics added)
I went to auction yesterday an picked up some dinner sets in boxlot.. I have 3 sets each has a cup, bowl an plate made of fine porcelain.. made for s s Kresge Company (now known as Kmart) one set is a boy an girl with blue birds, another is animals playing rabbit, bear ect... last one is mickey mouse with 2 child like mice has walt disney productions under mickey mouse, under all the plate ,cup an bowl has Japan on the mickey mouse other 2 sets are blank all are in the orginal boxes with orginal price tags on them.. Can anyone give me approx value for each set ? an dates for each set? I think I have narrowed the mickey mouse set to sometime in 40-late 70's.. I would make a good guess to being late 40's to mid 50's cause of the japan stamp.. but I been serching online for hours an can't find a thing about any of these sets.... thank you to anyone who can shed more light on these sets..

A little history for those 40 and under...Kresge, now the parent company of Kmart, was at one time known as a 5 & 10 Store (dime store) and a competitor of Woolworth's.
The more one learns the more he understands his ignorance. I am simply an ignor ant man trying to lessen his ignorance

Well so many of those were made. My parents have em, my granmother,my great grandmother. Price ranch at a yard sale 0.50 cents to $1.50. Sorry those aren't worth very much. I would save them..

the kresge trade mark is a time frame marker type item --that style screams 1970's -- seems the japanese liked the red lettering for "japan" so much from earlier that they kept on using it.

I found a timeline of K-Mart history at money.cnn.com . It says they moved corporate headquarters to Troy, MI in 1972. And they changed names to KMart Corporation in 1977. So your china must be from between those dates.

Giving a brief answer to Japanese backmarks is sorta like discussing the Rise & Fall of the Roman Empire in 100 words. LOL. "IF" all Japanese porcelain/china exports had been marked like they were supposed to have been, then it would not be a problem, but like with all things, some people don't play by the rules. Here is the 'general' consensus on Japanese backmarks: In 1891 the McKinley Tariff Act required items imported into the United States to be marked in English with the country of origin, not just a Japanese character. The name "Nippon" was chosen since Nippon is the Japanese word for Japan. In 1921, the official country of origin name requirement was changed to "Japan." During the period 1921-1941 porcelain should be marked "Japan" and roughly after 1941, marked "Made in Japan", though numerous exceptions occurred. Made in Occupied Japan is 1945-52. Pieces marked with JAPAN or MADE IN JAPAN in plain text (red or black letters) without any company marks, in general date to the period immediately after WWII.
So, yes, there are exports from Japan marked Japan after 1952 because of mistakes made by the Japanese companies. Even though your backmark could date 1952, your Mickey Mouse does not look like the MM of the early 1950's. I don't think you can use just the backmark to date these plates. I think you also need to look at the evolution of Mickey Mouse and how his character has changed in appearance over the years. Your Mickey is not the look of the early Steamboat Mickey. My personal opinion, I think your MM set was made after 1952 but before 1977. I would say mid 1960's to early 70's. It's a nice set, congrats! Breezie

ah chipveres (nice research work there) states they moved the headquarters to troy mich in 1972 * since the box has "troy mich" marked on it * it 1972 at earlist --and since they changed names to k mart in 1977 thats the latest it could be -- so it got to be bewteen 1972 and 1977 era * that should help you in hunting it down for a match.
