    Very deep silver thing

Found this silver thing in a historic 1800's area. It was at the base of a tree under a root 10" - 12" deep. I dug forever to find it.

It has a hinge on it, it opened up on one side. Any ideas?

Looks like something I used to see in small truck stop diners. For sugar maybe.

Now that I think about it, it may be for a saurkraut jar.

Crazy that it'd be so deep in a very heavy wooded area.

Was it near an old diner or homestead or dump? Im just guessing on the lid idea. What else do you find in the area? What kind of metal is it? It looks like the plating is coming off. Maybe someone had a picnic.

condiment jar lid, a picnic might be correct as to the why it was there.

Modern version. Some old were pottery or porcelain also.

    But...
The middle of the hinge appears to have had something attached

Maybe an older/different type of handle/knob for the lid? I think this one is solved

It was in the back yard of a late 1800's mansion that has since been torn down. Also found a Slaymaker lock about 10 feet from it. A railroad was by it, which carried dynamite.
