    It almost looks like a grease cup for something. Is the black stuff in the back photo dried grease or something?

    No it is just patina and rust. I thought maybe electroalysis for 5 minutes but it might destroy it. The angle of the groves if attached would hold it and keep it from swinging open maybe?
