looks to be a military type "general service" eagle button --- muffin type -- thus pre 1902 to maybe civil war era or a bit before

(in 1902 they switch to the great seal type) *

look on the back and tell us , or better yet show us a photo of it --much can be found out by data on the rear "back marks" of buttons .

The backmark is "Fine Gold Plate" with a shield on a ribbon at the backmark's top. According to the book "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates," that exact backmark was used (with shield-on-ribbon) was used only by the Steele & Johnson Manufacturing Co. of Waterbury CT. That exact backmark is found on US Army General Staff buttons listed as GS-12B in the Albert button-book. Your button's face is an exact match with GS-12B.

As indicated by the Albert book's listing, the great majority of GS12-B buttons have the backmark "Steele & Johnson / Waterbury CT" ...which dates from 1866 to the 1890s. That "most likely" means your GS-12B button, even with the Fine Gold Plate & Shield backmark, dates from the 1866-1890s era.
