Help ID Bullet Found on NJ Beach.

Hi all. Went out detecting at the Jersey shore with my new AT Pro! Among my finds were several fisher weights, a fishing lure, and what appears to be some sort of bullet? I have very little knowledge about bullets so I was hoping the great community here can help me ID this piece. Not sure how a bullet could end up on the beach but who knows!

    Thanks in advance,
    -Marc

Looks like a .50 cal military round. Probably from WW2 era planes that practiced in the area.

It does have the shape of a 50, but a 30 cal is .308/ 7.62mm

If measures 8 mm that is probably what it is. Military ball,, European Surplus. Rifles like the 8mm "Hakim" where sold by the bunches. Also Bolt action surplus rifles where sold for as little $59.00 dollars. The grid paper is 1/4" right? The cannelure bullet probably weights about 180 grains I would think.

WWI or II 8mm (8X57)Mauser Rifle bullet. Used extensively by the German armies both in rifles and machine guns. Hundreds of surplus 8mm rifles were sold as surplus after the war up until even now. I collect and shoot in competition military bolt action rifles and I have about six in 8mm Rifles. There are several different models available both in short and long action bolts. Many were sporterized into fine shooting hunting rifles and the rifles were made in models other than the 8X57, such as the 7X57, 6.5mm Swede and others. The model 98 Persians are probably the best made ones still on the market closely followed by the Swedes in 6.5mm. The 8mm is an excellent deer taking caliber and is adequate for bear and elk with the heavier bullets. But your bullet is of the 8X57 ilk no doubt. Monty
