    Re: excelsior eagle button ?

If your button's emblem is exactly the same as the one shown in the drawing you posted, you've found a New York State Militia button. That exact button-emblem is listed (and shown) in the Alphaeus Albert button-book as button #NY-9B. (The drawing you posted is a scan from the Albert book.) The only backmark listed for button #NY-9B is "H. Wishart" ...who was in business from 1784 to at least 1810.

You asked how to change the filesize of photos. There are various "image-management" programs for doing that. The program I use is Windows Photo Gallery. When you use it to view a photo, at the top of the screen you'll see an option to Email the photo. Use that option to email the photo too yourself. The program will automatically downsize the photo's filesize, without making the photo look any smaller.

    Re: excelsior eagle button ?

Broken Knee, now that the photo of your button has been posted, I can tell you that it is definitely NY-10 (the one which is cut in half by the edge of the scan you previously posted).

For accurate ID of buttons, extra-cose examination of the emblem's small details is crucial. (It's like playing the game titled "Can You Spot 5 Differences Between These Two Pictures?".)

On the civilwarbuttons.com website (linked by Timekiller), you can see that on NY-11 the twist-lines in the rope which the half-globe is sitting on lean to the right. On the websites US107 NY-10, the half-globe base's rope-twists lean to the left -- like on your button.

Your button appears to be very nearly an exact match with the specimen shown as NY-10 in the Albert-book photo. Close examination of the two NY-10 buttons at civilwarbuttons.com shows they are not an exact match with the Albert-book photo. In the book's NY-10 photo, there is a V-shaped space between the eagle's neck and the wing-top on the button's right ...just like your button shows.

On both of the website's two "NY-10" buttons, there is no gap at all between the eagle's neck and the wing-top on the right. But that doesn't mean they are "strictly" not NY-10. The Albert book says there are many variations of NY-10. So, the website is showing two NY-10 "Variants." Your button is another of the variations of NY-10.

Also according to the Albert book, your variation of NY-10 is usually seen having the backmark "Lewis & Tomes / Extra Rich." Some other NY-10 Variants have the backmark "T.Potts / Imperial / J.M." The buttons were made in England (where Lewis was a merchant) and imported into the US. The Lewsis & Tomes firm was listed as having an office in New York City from 1819 to 1826.
