    Mystery mustache-antenna thingy.

First post, here goes. I found this a few years ago detecting demolished home site in downtown Fort Wayne. It is 3" long and about 2" tall. It is apx. 1/4" thick. The back side looks no different than the front other than it is flatter. The part facing the camera has edges which are beveled off a bit which makes me think of it as the "front". It seems to be iron and has a bit of weight to it. I'm not sure if it is upside down or backwards in the pic. The houses torn down where I found it were probably late 1800's -turn of the century age. It just had such an odd shape I kept it in the ? box. Thanks for any help.

I think this is a relic from the early 1930's. It is little known that Joseph Stalin attempted to rule his burgeoning Soviet Union in the 1930's using the Iron Mustache. Unfortunately for Stalin people kept putting them in thier pockets and emigrating to America. Later unsuccessful attempts included the Iron Throw Rug and the Iron Chesterfield Sofa. Keeping with his decorator theme he finally hit upon the Iron Curtain with which he had great success until his death in 1953.

    Or maybe not...

You nailed it! No wonder he was a jerk. That thing had to hurt when in your nose. Seriously though it looks so much like a mustache that i thought it might be ornamental art or something.

Stalin - Devil, Decorator, Dictator (not necessarily in that order).

The fact that this item is flat on one side leads me to think that is more likely a decoative piece - but it seems to have had a specific function as well. So what household items would have been made of iron and used a part like this?

One thought I had was that it could be a key or special wrench of some sort - like for turning gas or water valves. I also considered stove and furnace parts. I even wonder about car parts. I'm an antique car owner but I can't think of any use on a car for a part like this.

    Still thinking...

Could this simple be a door knocker? I can see how it would hang to be used in that fashion.
