cast iron ball/ counter weight 3.27 inches

This is an iron ball that was cast with a slot and an indented sholder. It is 3.27 inches in diameter. It looks like it had an Eye-bolt inserted with a nut in the slot. It has grinding marks where the casting was cleaned up. This looks like it may have been a counter weight.

I think you're on the right track about it being a counterweight-ball. The slot in the ball would fit over a thick flat iron bar, and the eyebolt would screw into a hole in the bar, locking the ball in place at a particular location on the counterweight bar.
