    Any ideas?

This was found on a treasure hunting trip last month. It's all aluminum and sealed. It has 2 wires and a PCB inside. It was found near a base so it may be from a plane of some kind. It fell from the sky for sure because of the damage at the top. It looks like some type of sensor. Any ideas?

Reminds me of a surge protector we use on outdoor electrical breaker boxes. Ours are plastic and sealed and a bit smaller but generally looks the same.

If it looks like a capacitor and has PCB fluid inside, it must be a capacitor.

LOL Well the wires are way small for that size of cap. But it could be. Explosive yeah we thought of that too. By the way I cut the red wire!!!!!

    Re: Any ideas?

It looks just like a potentiometer. The damaged area would have been fitted with a wheel or cog to that would mesh with the gears for something that would move and display a signal to the operator...Just like a rudder on a larger vessel or plane. We use them for our rudder angle indicators, and the potentiaometer sends the signal by wire to the wheelhouse when the rudder control is operated. Don't recommend keeping it, because it's just like a transistor canister.

No markings whatsover? Can you remove the top? Is it leaking PCB fluid?

    Re: Any ideas?

One of the team members has it and says he going to put 12vdc on it and see what happens. I advised him not to do that! Yes it completely sealed and would have to be cut to open. I don't advise that either!

    Re: Any ideas?

Definitely looks like a LARGE capacitor to me. I would certainly NOT suggest powering it up, since a capacitor would really bite back, since it stores a loooooooot of juice!!
