    Brass Something

I was detecting in a soccer field and got this piece of brass. At first it looked like a rifle site off
a British 303 but not sure. Any ideas?

Correct. More percisely a concertina or "squeezebox" reed. In the late 19th and early 20th C these were a major form of entertainment.

Must have been a REALLY popular form of entertainment because they sure show up alot. Did the reeds go bad and people just chucked them out the back door?

Whether organ or concertina, the reeds went bad and you could get replacements. The broken ones were just tossed.

Concertinas and harmonicas were like the radios of the 19th and very early 20th century. Just about everybody had one.

The concertinas pictured above are modern. Early instruments had reeds very similar to the pump organ reeds.
