And, if you cross a male horse and a female donkey, you get a Hinny. Charles Fey made a 3 JACKS slot machine circa 1910, which I'm assuming is referring to playing cards instead of jackasses, but the association with gambling, smoking, drinking, bars, etc. may be the connection. If you look around the jack, you can see an edge as in the shape of a playing card. . . .or it could be a 'political' connection. I'm leading toward a gambling theme.
