    Brass Capsule

Last weekend I was searching an old farm near one of the barns. Found one half then the other about three feet away.

They fit together to make a capsule ~3 1/2" long X 1 3/8" in diameter.

    No markings on either half.

    Any idea what it is?

    Thanks!

    Jeff

Most match safes were flat so they easily fit in a pocket, not round like this.

Match safes were also round. Your find could have been used to hold pills/medicine, but because of the length, I agree with da prof and think it is a match safe.

Match safes were also used in the house for fireplaces and cooking. One of the purposes of keeping matches in a metal container was to prevent mice/rats from gnawing the matches and setting the house on fire.

Congrats on finding both halves. Breezie

The first thing I thought of when looking at it is an antique snake bite kit, but the brass construction couldn't provide the 'suction' as the old boy scout rubber ones were supposed to be used for so it's just a guess.

I knew I had seen something similar before.
Looks like an atique needle case (check out some on e-bay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=brass+needle+case)

But I think yours looks quite large....

    Like this russian example maybe?
