Looks like it's off of a pistol, perhaps a flintlock. Marks on the guard are probably decorative. Proof marks, when used, were on the barrel. American made firearms of that era didn't have proof marks, they were made one at a time in local gunsmith and blacksmith shops. Looking at the mark, it could possibly be an eclipse of the sun, which would give you a chance to date the gun, because in Kindig's book on Kentucky Long Rifles he mentions a rifle that was decorated with an eclipse, and that dated the gun to the time of the eclipse in the 1700's.
