I took one look and the shape of this cob jumps out at me because I have seen it before. It eerily resembles a known counterfeit. I dont have time to research it but check here first, 4th and 5th coin down. http://www.sedwickcoins.com/fake_cobs.htm Please post in our Spanish cobs forum to be sure and let our experts there take a look. No 2 cobs are identical, sorry, so if you find a match, its fake.

Just to clarify, I hope Im wrong. Copy and paste the fake from Sedwicks, rotate and put them side by side. Sorry I dont have time, gotta go but Im sure some of the fine members here can help. Good luck in what may be a great find but maybe not.

I did not find it, an acquaintance of mine bought it from a metal detectorist one recently and was not able to identify it.
I say thank you for the help very much, I believed it how it is not possible to hit one like this on a tillage.

Im often guilty of responding too quickly. We need to post the known fakes side by side with this cob. First glance looks similar but I may be wrong. If its a fake, it a good one.

Full weight would be about 27.5 grams; yours at 27 grams is no problem.
The coin should be about 93% silver. It looks good to me.

That is absolutely correct... They were clearly using a certain planchet cutting technique that resulted in repetition of this general shape ("barrel shaped" is one descriptive for it). This idea is actually SUPPORTED by the existence of that ubiquitous Chinese fake, which is seen with various dates altered to preference (the style is actually mid-late 1650's). Clearly that fake was based upon an actual piece of the period which displayed this typical shape...

As a side note, while I actually have seen some slight alteration of the shape used on "THAT" fake, the duplication of the imprinted design is always rather exact.

This piece looks perfectly legit... Assayer P; the Granada pomegranate style narrows it to 1634-54; the specific style of the lions (tilted back/looking up) dates it to right around 1646-49. Yes, there is clearly a general similarity there in shape/orientation of strike there... but again, chalk that up to the similar production technique (remembering that the mentioned fake was clearly copied from a piece of the period).

The amount of time it took to write those posts was more than it would have taken to do a quick comparison of the two pieces, which easily leads to the realization that they aren't close to an exact match.

I realized that when I got home from work and had a minute to compare lol. I was just getting the conversation started also in a huge rush. My bad. I thought someone would have posted the pics side by side but Sedwick is probably copyrighted. Its all a great learning experience. I believe I only said that it eerily resembles the Chinese fake. Geez I hope Taranis checks back. His head butting against the wall and quick green check makes me think he was expecting it to be fake. Taranis please reply your cob is not the Chinese fake on Sedwicks it vaguely resembles. Thanks for posting Realeswatcher, I respect your opinion and have read many of your posts on the cob forum.

While no 2 cobs are identical, I agree, this one is not a match. But it never ceases to amaze me how far criminal minds will go to sell a fake Spanish cob. Someone maybe could take the Chinese fake and make changes to it creating a special one of a kind fake cob.
