OK guys,
Here is something that was found at a old home site the dates back to the early 1800's.
It has a little cone shaped thing that fell out of it while it was being cleaned.
As you can see the holes in the cone line up with the holes in the bigger item.
There is a little gold gilt left on the very top piece below the loop.
It seems to be made of brass. And is about 2" long.
Any idea what it could be?
Thanks!
How about a bell clanger/clapper? Is the smaller piece made of lead or brass? Breezie
Sorry I took so long to get back with you guys. I was real busy yesterday.
Breezie, I don't think the cone is made of lead. I think it is made of brass also. It was up in the bottle shaped item. It fits tight in there. With the point of the cone going in first. I will try to figure out for sure what the cone is made of. Thanks for your help!

Dennis, I have never seen an antique clotheline tightener before, But I think this thing would be too small. Thanks!
Something else I want to throw out there is this.
I found this other thing at the same spot close by. (see pic below)
Chuck in Oregon said this about it.
"G. H. Mumm is a well-known brand of champagne. I think that is the grip (for want of a better word) for removing the wire device over the cork from a bottle of champagne.
Chuck"
My Buddies Floyd & Dickie said they used to hang from the bottle when you bought them.
That's why it has a loop.
So I ask you all, could this item be the same thing? It is shaped like a bottle & it has a loop also.
Just a thought.

Wow RTDE3, I think you are on your way to solving your mystery. It may be a folding pocket corkscrew/penknife. Its shaped like a bottle and the slot in the side could be to open and close the corkscrew. It may even be a miniature keychain penknife combination. Here are a few examples from Christies: http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/l...jectID=1608659 Could it be feasible?
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines. I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.
Are those rivets? It may be the attachment for the corkscrew or blade.

This one is a stumper. It looks very utilitarian yet it has traces of gold gilt.
I wonder if it is the just inside parts of something. The loop on the top looks like chrome. I don't get the feeling that it is older than early 20th C.
It looks to be about the size of a lipstick tube. Right?
Any indication that the loop moved or turned?
Where was the 'cone' located? At the top or the bottom or the middle?
Still thinking and searching...

Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense and plain dealing.

I take it you are not excited about the corkscrew theory.

That has to be it! Good job bigcypresshunter! I'm marking this one solved!
That website even listed the same G.H. MUMM company as the other thing I found.
I got to Thank Chuck In Oregon for putting us on the right path!
You guys Rock!

Hey Matt!
The loop does turn but it is threaded in the top. The cone fits just inside the bottom thightly. I think to give structure.
I had 2 other buddies say it looked like things they had seen hanging on bottles of wine & such in the past. So I'm pretty sure it was a cork screw or knife like in the picture.
Thanks to you & everyone else for trying on this one!!
Rob, at first I didnt understand the bottom piece. Besides giving structure, it portrays the large indented bottom punt of a GH Mumm champagne bottle. Obviously the blade and some parts are missing or rusted away. I think we got it right. http://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions...s-8951658.html
