    Found bullet, need help

    Hello all,

Found this bullet this past weekend. I'm thinking it is a 54 cal carbine. Not sure exactly what it is though. Can some one please help me identify what type of bullet it is.
Best measurements I can get are 10mm at base and about 18mm long. Please let me know if any additional information is needed.

    Thank you.

Well... in your photos showing a millimeter ruler, the bullet appears to measure about 11 millimeters in diameter ...which is approximately correct for a .44-caliber lead bullet. Judging by that and your bullet's overall form, the closest match would seem to be a civil war era .44-caliber Colt "early-model" bullet, made for use in a Colt Army revolver. Compare one of that kind in the photo below with your bullet.

Note, you said your bullet is 10mm wide at its base, but it gets a bit wider than that at the top of its "rebated" base. So I think 11mm is about right for its main-body diameter. Also, there is a .44 Colt "early-model" bullet which is .770" long, and that is quite close to the approximately 18mm length you report for your bullet. See bullets #488 and #489 in the McKee-&-Mason book on civil war bullets.

    Thank you Cannonball!

Just the information I was looking for. It's my first bullet finding and now I have a new book I need to find. Once again, thank you for the answer and info.

Nice bullet you found. Now you need to go out there and find more....and more.....and more. Does it ever end? I hope not
