1858 eight over seven flying eagle cent ?

Hi all. I have an 1858 flying eagle cent and I was wondering what some of y'all might think. All the photos I can find of the 8/7 variety to me looks no different than a regular 1858. On my coin the upper right section of the 8 looks like it could be an overdate...but I dont know. Thanks in advance !

Can't tell from the pic. Other diagnositics to look for are a triangular shape die chip above the first 8 (about half way between the 8 and the bust) and a "broken" wing tip.

Re: 1858 eight over seven flying eagle cent ?

The 1858/7 Flying Eagle Cent is the only known overdate for the short lived series, and very popular as such. Several dies were left over from the previous year and overdated, although the differences are small and not widely known except to specialists. Only the earliest die states show clear remnants of the 7, making those the most valuable.

Die markers which allow the overdate to be identified in low grade include a broken wingtip and a triangular chip in the field between the date and eagle.

About 300 examples of an estimated 2,000 pieces produced still in existence in all grades. look at the tip of the wing in between of and America for broken wing tip. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...=300640959056+ Notice the chip above the 8
