More Mysterious Than The Chicken Egg Counter Thing?

This thing has had me baffled for over a year now.

I found it in river mud near a dam in Michigan that was built of logs and rocks in the 1860's. I posted it here a year ago before cleaning with no luck on the ID.

A pic before electrolysis with mud, rust, and what I think is decayed leather stuck all over it.

After Zapping it for about 12 hours this is what it looks like. The right end of it looks like a handle to me, it may have been wrapped with wood or leather at one time. The two rib-like things to the left lead me to believe that that end was in a sheath or scabbard.

A closeup of what I'll call the sheathed end shows a thin layer of exposed copper that was covered with something.

Closeup of the ribs. If this is part of a scabbard these would be called risers and are there to keep the open end of the scabbard open and can be used to suspend the scabbard from a belt with a lanyard or loop.

Any ideas what this could be? I know it's not a sword, sabre, or knife. It must be a tool of some kind.

It looks like an automotive part.
I live in a state of rules where I am not permitted to live on my own country land because my home is not 130 MPH rated! I can only visit it from time to time and pay the fines.  I feel so safe with Big Government protecting me. In some states its illegal to collect rainwater.

I was thinking part of an auto steering column myself. I'm pretty sure it was part of a steering or suspension for an auto. Monty
