Well I would say so, it looks to be a Copper/Alloy (Bronze) Buckle, so I would date that 1800s, the stamped Brass came later I believe.

    Tinpan,

That particular style and design of clothing strap buckle was patented in 1855. They are typically found in sites dating late 1850's through 1880's or so. In dry arid desert locations, I have literally found a handful of the steel buckles with the 1855 patent date marking, in sites that were most active in the 1870's. The brass ones seem to be the only surviving detectable examples though, from areas where small ferrous targets are usually rusted away, or discriminated out.

Here is an earlier discussion on the subject:

    Silver Searcher,

The stamped brass buckles of the patent design by Sheldon Hartshorn, are also found dated 1855. I have personally found both the brass and steel examples, on the same sites, from the same time period (circa. 1855-1885)

That buckle is a suspender, pants adjuster, type of buckle. Because of the 2 tines on it I would date it to the 1850's till late 1860's. Sore of that pattern have a patent date on them and some also have a makers name. We did that style in a lot of civil war era sites around here in Tennessee. Good find. Tennessee digger

Also wanted to ad that they were also used on vest and CC Hunter is right in his post. If you clean off the little flat bar that the 2 sharp tines is touching you may see a patient date. Tennessee digger

    Silver Searcher,

Typing a reply "off the cuff" is only allowed for buttons.

For the topic at hand, one must "buckle down" for the proper information.
