    Button ID and info please...

Hello all. I was out hunting yesterday and recovered this button. Recovered from around 8-10". The button. Was hoping for information on it such at type and possible age. Button is a little larger than a quarter and features a eagle with anchor. E
agle is facing right and has 13 stars overhead. Backmark says Scoville Mfg. Co. Waterbury. Thanks in advance for any help with the button.

I agree with Bluehunter1973, your button is a US Marine Corps enlisted-man's button. Because the specific emblem on it was in use from 1821 through today, we rely on the VERY-EXACT backmark for dating the button's era of manufacture. Your button's "Scovill MFG. Co. Waterbury" backmark has two stars, but lacks a circle of dots or rings or any other marking -- which means it dates from the 1890s into the first half of the 20th-Century.

Thanks for the input. This button is larger than the one from the link above. What would it have been used for? A coat button or something? It is slightly larger than a US quarter maybe measures around 1 1/8". I'm assuming that this would have been a very common button and not really having any sort of value to it but still a neat find. Recovered from somewhere around 8" or so...kind of a deep target.
