    Lincoln junior club,,button????

Found this under a pretty nice sized tree in between some nasty roots. Read strong as a coin, but its just not. Looks like a button of some sort. Tried to research it but couldnt find anything. There is a Lincoln coin club, but did not find any buttons on their site. Has anybody else seen anything like it? PS.....Sorry about the big pictures, lol

Lincoln Junior Club resized. Schwaabs & Son Company, Milwaukee (Scwaabs & S. Co.)

I believe this will date around 1890's to early 20th century. Its an interesting find but I dont know what it is. Looks like a medallion. Can you tell us the size?

No info on the item, as yet, but have something on the manufacturer.

And from a sparate post last year on a different item from the same manufacturer

I saw that Snoopy but Im not sure if Schwaab Inc is the same company as Scwaabs & S. Co. Most likely the same Milwaukee family of companies but I see no mention of it.

There came to be a total of four corporations under the Schwaab roof: the Schwaab Stamp and Seal Company, the Schwaab Engraving Company, the Schwaab Label Company, and the Schwaab Rubber Art Company. ...Today, over 126 years later, Schwaab, Inc. ownership continues to remain solely among the descendants of Andrew Schwaab and their families.

    Re: Lincoln junior club,,button????

A club for African-American Youth. I find refernces from 1890 into the 1950's.

    From a 1932 newspaper article

    Junior Club
Dressed in colonial costumes, the Abraham Lincoln Junior Club, comprising girls from eight to twelve years of age, rode sedately in a large yellow and white float.Mrs. Rose Shepard, their mother advisor, also dressed in colonial costume accompanied them.
    Another reference:
From his teenage years on Mercer often crossed the city’s racial divide, absorbing the influences that shaped his music. He haunted the black neighborhood just beyond here, listening to “race records” by the likes of Bessie Smith. One of his first collaborators was Louis Armstrong, and in 1944 the Abraham Lincoln Junior Club named Mercer “the most popular young colored singer on the radio.”

Hmmm. I may have misread the back of the medallion then. I took it to be Schwaab S&S Co. (Schwaab Stamp & Seal) which was formed in 1888 and continued under that name until it merged, along with it's sister companies, into Schwaab Inc. in 1973.

In 1881, Andrew founded the Northwestern Stamp Company in Milwaukee and added two branches — one in St. Paul where his brother George was manager and one in Chicago with brother Theodore managing. Finding it difficult to operate in three locations, the two branches were sold and operations consolidated in Milwaukee.

On May 8, 1888, the company incorporated and changed its name to Schwaab Stamp and Seal Company...............

There came to be a total of four corporations under the Schwaab roof: the Schwaab Stamp and Seal Company, the Schwaab Engraving Company, the Schwaab Label Company, and the Schwaab Rubber Art Company. On January 1, 1973, the four corporations were combined into one — the Schwaab Stamp and Seal Company. A few months later, the company's name was changed to Schwaab, Inc.
And not to take away from DCMatt's great info on the Lincoln Junior Club, here is another article about Schwaab S&S that lists their wide variety of products in the early days.

    http://www.jsonline.com/business/92147649.html

The stamp company moved several times in downtown Milwaukee in the late 1800s and was the scene of a deadly fire on Feb. 3, 1903. It went on to produce coins for the 1904 World's Fair and an array of other products, including coins for the U.S. Mint, badges, tokens, ashtrays, medals, dies, stencils and seals.

Great leads, thanks ! Someone also asked me the size of the mysterious thing, and its about the size of another penny. Do you guys think taking it to a coin shop would get me any closer to identifying it? Below is the thing next to a real penny.

You could try but since its not a coin, they probably will not be of much help.

I think Matt and Snoopy pretty much got it: African-American Youth Club token from 1888-1973 made by Schwaab Stamp and Seal Company. We need to put a more precise date to it. Maybe some more information will surface. Its a very nice find.

I didnt even realize it was a button. I guess it would help if I read the title.

So its not related to the African-American Abraham Lincoln Junior Club?

    Great work Bramblefind. Amazing.

Great finish to this one. I couldn't find anything on the Junior Club and must have gone through 20+ pages of google links, lol.

I found an identical pin/button several years ago and never was able to find any info on it. I'm convinced now that it is associated with the above mentioned clothing promotion. I do not believe it had anything to do with the mentioned African American club because of race issues in my area many years ago. Here's a pic of mine...

I'll have to do some digging to find it. It's packed away with finds from long ago.... I found it probably 15 years ago. I do know that the back is the same as the other one pictured. The attachment is gone from mine too.

No problem. I just wanted to see your back attachment so there is no need to find it.
