The search feature here at the new Treasurenet is horrible but I managed to find the old TN thread on Google. Ask your friend if any member of his family participated in Renaissance Fair or Middle Age re-enactments. Strange silver coin?
They actually mint their own gold coinage by taking features from a real coin but adding unusual lettering. As Mack said earlier, the lettering is pure fantasy.
I didnt find a match and Im not really looking but these groups actually mint their own gold and silver coinage. If you find one in the USA, your heart will skip a beat. http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/sca/sca.html

I never heard of those Middle Ages re-enactments either until Moe and I IDed the silver coin from the "Kingdom of Caid" lol. Further research revealed that they actually mint gold and silver token coins to use as legal tender at the Fairs. To me its unbelievable! Im not saying this is what you have but its possible.

remember this * reales were made of silver * --it took 2 - 8 reale coins - 16 reales to equal a 1 escaudo (gold coin) --the offical spanish govt rate was 16 silver reales = 1 escaudo of gold --
there are no 4 reale "gold" coins - if its a 4 reale coin --either its a "real" silver 4 reale thats been "gold plated" -- or its a 12k gold plated base metal core replica or solid 12 k replica jewelry piece -- 12 k gold was often commonly used during the victorian age --civil war to 1900 era by the way --after 1900 --10 k became more the common mans jewelry with 14 k and 18 k used by folks with a bit more cash to spend

well its either a gold plated real silver 4 reale * or a gold plated aluminum repilca - its well known that gold and aluminum --ring up very close on the electrical conductivity scale -- so --it might be a old victorian era 12 k plated 0ver silver 4 real or a replica of one from that era -- or a modern aluminum based gold plated 12 k repilca that somehow made it into the bible -- if its old its a cool little trinket --
silver jewelry with gold overplate is called vermeil

well knowing what I know -- a 4 spanish reale is a silver coin * not gold -- your coin rings up as silver --yet has a 12k gold plating on it -- 12 k gold was commonly used during the old days civil war to 1900 era * --it fell out of favor post 1900 * with folks either going down to 10 K or up to 14 K , or 18 K -- it doesn't seem to match up perfectly lettering wize to a "real' 4 reale silver coin but looks "close" -- so it could be either a old victorican era vermeil (silver base / gold plated) 12 k "replica" coin --- or a more modern one that somehow found its way into that old family bible somehow -- my guess would be victorican era vermeil "replica" --since 12k gold has been out of fashion for a long long time
