Looks like a hinge stop for a door, not sure if those have existed very long but that's what it reminds me of, also I think it is upside down in photo, appears to read Jo_ng maybe?

Probably WAY off, but it reminds me in some way of the head for a linstock, which is the pole used to hold the match cord to light a cannon.......

Although it resembles a door stop.....that old and brass, I believe it is too intricate and detailed for a door stop.

I think I have it! It's a "pin" style door stop, meaning you removed one of the hinge pins and re - inserted it through the hole in the stop, then you adjusted the screw containing the rubber stop, to prevent the door handle from hitting the wall. Check out this link, Schlage 70 Hinge Pin Door Stop .....nge

Obviously designed to screw into wood, I think that this would be the proper position for this item, and that the script on it says something like Johm G or John G .. anyhow the first letter is a J and the last a G

My first thought was part of a sewing bird or sewing table clamp. But I can't find any that look even remotely close to this item.

Creskol, thats what I thought to. Now that you flipped the picture and I can see the letters larger it almost looks like it is actually Jo. then two letters and a g, could be ing but jo. ing doesnt seem to make sense.
